The Church of St. Catherine in Nijemci is situated in an exceptionally nice prehistoric location called Gradina - with the textbook example of the preserved moat. The church was built in the Gothic style from the 14th century, while later modifications give it baroque characteristics of the cross-shaped ground-plan. Within the restoration, archeological excavations were also carried out in 1998 and 1999. Under the current floor, another two floor layers were found, and in the right angle below the apse, traces of Roman architecture. During the excavation, graves in rows belonging to the Bijelo brdo culture were found, and the remains of the monumental structure from an earlier phase. On the basis of probing research, it could have been concluded that a three-nave Romanesque structure is in question, on which the Gothic church was laid. The finding of the Roma-nesque church is extremely important, because the existing gap from the period of pre-Romanesque and the Romanesque period started to be filled. During the excavation, the prehistoric layers were not reached, but surface findings could ascertain a settlement at the foot of Gradina from the period of the Sopot culture from early Stone Age.
